STATs

Signal transducer and activator of transcription proteins regulate many different aspects of growth, survival, and differentiation in cells. STAT proteins exist in a latent state and must be activated by tyrosine phosphorylation. The activated phosphorylated STAT proteins are able to dimerize and move into the cell nucleus to activate transcription by binding to specific DNA regions. This activation occurs after one or more cytokines bind with the receptors and initiate the cytokine pathway. The basic model for this pathway depends on three separate tyrosine phosphorylations catalyzed by the enzyme Janus kinase. The basic STAT structure includes a carboxyl terminal end that contains the transactivation domain and a DNA binding domain near the center of the STAT. Other protein to protein interactions and even STAT-STAT interactions are made possible by the four stranded helical coiled coil in the center of the STAT protein near the DNA binding domain.

Anti-STAT1 antibody binds against the target STAT1 or signal transducer and activator of transcription 1. STAT1 is a signal transducer and activator that mediates the signaling of interferons. Interferons are involved in the immune response against viral invaders. STAT1 is localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells. Deficiencies in STAT1 result in impaired immunity responses which eventually lead to severe bacterial and viral infections. Defects in STAT1 cause mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease. Anti-SOCS3 antibody binds against the target SOCS3. SOCS3 is expressed in the heart, placenta, skeletal muscle, peripheral blood leukocytes, lung, and kidney. It is a negative regulator of cytokines. Defects in SOCS3 are implicated in atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. Symptoms include blisters, discharge, raw skin, redness, and inflammation.
