RNA Processing

Like DNA, ribonucleic acid exists as a long chain molecule composed of nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate. Typically, RNA remains as a single strand as opposed to DNA which associates into a double stranded double helix type structure. RNA comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and serves many important functions that are vital to all living beings. The RNA nucleotide bases are adenine, uracil, cytosine, and guanine. RNA is responsible for transferring genetic information from the nucleus necessary to create proteins in the ribosome. Subtypes of RNA each have their own particular purpose. mRNA, or messenger RNA, carries information from the DNA to the ribosome. rRNA, or ribosomal RNA, is a structural component or RNA. tRNA, or transfer RNA, directly helps in protein synthesis as it assists in the joining of amino acids into proteins. RNA processing is necessary to generate mature RNA structures from a primary transcript. RNA processing is an intricate process that can be broken down into 3 reactions: nucleolytic cleavage, chain extension, and nucleotide modification.

Pre mRMA processing factor 31 is involved in pre-mRNA splicing. Defects in PRPF31 are the cause of retinitis pigmentosa. Melanoma differentiation associated protein 5 is an RNA helicase that promotes degradation by certain RNAses. MDA5 is also involved in the innate immunity response against invading viruses. Defects in the gene that encodes for MDA5 are associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This is also known as type 1 diabetes and is characterized by the inability to produce insulin leading to insulin deficiency.
