Neurogenesis

Neurogenesis, or the birth of neurons, is the process by which neurons are created. Most neurons are created during pre-natal development. These neurons are generated from neural stem cells and progenitor cells. Certain types of neurons from the subventricular zone (olfactory neurons) and subgranular zone (hippocampal neurons) are known to generate throughout adulthood. Current scientific research is focusing on other forms of adult neurogenesis. For example, depression has been linked to decreased hippocampal neurogenesis. Lack of sleep has been linked to decreased hippocampal neurogenesis. Exercise has shown to increase hippocampal newborn neurons. Cannabinoids, like the THC chemical found in marijuana, has shown to protect the brain against inflammation and actually increase memory potential in old age. Neurogenesis antibodies are useful in forms of scientific research centered on neurogenesis.

Dejerine-Sottas syndrome is a hereditary motor disease characterized by moderate to severe lower and upper extremity weakness. Onset occurs in infancy and early childhood with typically slow progression until the teenage years where the disease than progresses rapidly. Hypomyelination neuropathy is a neurological disorder present at birth characterized by respiratory difficulty, muscle weakness, and loss of coordination. Roussy-Levy syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by poor judgment of movement, absence of reflexes, and muscle atrophy. Anti-MSX1 antibody binds against the target msh homeobox 1 like protein. This protein is localized in the cell nucleus and expressed in the developing nail bed mesenchyme. MSH homeobox 1 like protein acts as a transcriptional repressor and plays a role in limb-pattern formation. Defects in MSX1 are the cause of tooth agenesis selective type 1, Witkop syndrome, and non-syndromic orofacial cleft type 5. Tooth agenesis selective type 1 is a form of selective tooth agenesis characterized by congenital absence of one or more teeth. Witkop syndrome, or "tooth and nail syndrome", is a rare disorder characterized by weak, thin nails of small size along with the absence of certain teeth. Non-syndromic orofacial cleft type 5 is a common birth defect consisting of cleft lips with or without a cleft palate.
