Lymphoid

Lymphoid refers to anything like lymph, lymphatic tissue, or part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is often times referred to as the "garbage disposal" of the body. It acts as a cleaner of the bodily systems which is necessary in order to remain healthy. The lymph system, in part, contains the highways and garages by which the immune system cells travel and live. Organs of the lymphatic system include the spleen, thymus, tonsils, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. The liver also assists in the cleansing of bodily systems. Lymph nodes are tiny filter headquarters which may become enlarged when fighting infection. Human lymphatic systems in comparison to other mammals are quite similar. Lymphoid tissues themselves contain lymphocytes among other types of cells. Lymphocytes are white blood cells found in vertebrate immune systems. A lymphocytes main function is to provide a targeted immune response against invading microorganisms. A typical lymphocyte is between 7 and 8 micrometers in diameter. These lymphocytes are manufactured in the lymphoid tissue in the body and originate from fetal stem cells which mature in the bone marrow. The two types of lymphocytes are T cells and B cells. In cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, the lymphocytes become metastatic and either continues to circulate throughout the body, or form solid tumors. The immature form of a lymphocyte is called a lymphoblast. High levels of immature lymphoblasts in the blood or lymph systems are characteristic of certain types of leukemia and lymphoma.

Anti-CD10 antibody binds against CALLAS (common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen). Common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen is a characterization of leukemias and lymphomas in blood. CALLA has a thermolysin-like specificity but prefers to act against polypeptides of a particular size (up to 30 amino acids in length). CD10 is located on the cell membrane and is part of the peptidase M13 family. Other antibodies like anti-ALB1 antibody and anti-ALB2 antibody will recognize the common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen. These antibodies can be produced by immunizing the target animal with cells from patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Some studies have been done which proclaim these antibodies also have an affinity to recognize and bind against constituents of the human nephron. Monoclonal antibody treatment is showing promise in the treatment of cancers like lymphoma. Rituxan (Rituximab) is such an antibody that binds against the CD20 antigen. CD20 is a molecule on the surface of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas. When the Rituxan or anti-CD20 antibody binds against this surface marker, the lymphoma cells begin to die.
