lba1 Antibodies

Abcore sells antibodies against Iba1, and we consider it to be one of the most important product ranges we offer. Currently we offer antibodies which have been raised in goat, but a broader range of Iba1 antibodies is under development. Since we find Iba1 research to be so important, we have tried to summarize some of the basic Iba1 research here. Also, please find a list of our Iba1 antibodies listed below. Also, if we do not have an antibody against Iba1 which will help you in your research, please remember that Abcore can make a custom antibody which will meet all of your requirements.

Iba1 is a macrophage and microglia specific calcium-binding protein. It was first identified by Imai, et al. in 1996 [1]. Other research groups also isolated this protein and named it AIF-1 [2] and BART-1 [3]. From sequence homology it has 2 EF-hand domains which are conserved in many calcium binding proteins. Initial RNA blotting analysis showed that Iba1 is highly expressed in spleen, and has low expression levels in brain, lung and kidney [1]. Much of the subsequent research has been concentrated on its functioning in brain tissues. It is present in high levels in microglia, but there has been no evidence that it is present in neurons or astrocytes [4]. Microglia are a class of macrophage which are present in the central nervous system.

In microglia, Iba1 it is upregulated when the microglia are activated [4]. It has been localized to membrane ruffles and phagocytic cups. Also of note, when Iba1 is downregulated the ruffling and phagocytosis in microglia is completely inhibited [5]. Iba1 is involved in the M-CSF signaling pathway and in Rac signaling which is involved in actin cytoskeleton restructuring. M-CSF binds to an Fms tyrosine kinase receptor, which then activates FMS. Next Ras is activated via PI3K, PLC gamma, and Iba1 [6]. Iba1 acts in concert with Rac, which controls activation of microglia, to control actin reorganization and therefore is involved in microglia activation, proliferation, phagocytosis, and migration [6,7].
