Invasion

There are a few harmful microbes that can invade the body and make it sick. There is also strong evidence that microbes can contribute to many other non-infectious chronic diseases such as cancer or even heart disease. The microbes that invade the body are called pathogens. The types of microbes range from bacteria and viruses to fungus and tiny single celled organisms like protozoa. In humans, microbes can enter the body via four routes: the respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal tract, the urogenital tract, and/or breaks in the skin surface. Invasion inhibitory antibodies exist which can recognize and bind against the antigens present on the invading microbes. These antibodies are the basis of vaccine development, vaccine use, and other aspects of stopping invasion. The mechanism of action of the invasion-inhibitory antibodies can differ. For instance, antibodies against the atypical membrane antigen of Plasmodium falciparum inhibit the microbe’s invasion into erythrocytes. This is useful in the prevention of Plasmodium falciparum from perpetuating malaria. In human carcinoma cells, the attachment, invasion, and metastasis of the cancer can be inhibited by the anti-integrin beta 1 subunit antibody. This antibody works by binding against the integrins on the surface of certain carcinoma cell lines.

Anti-survivin antibody binds against the target protein survivin. Survivin is localized in the cytoplasm, nucleus, chromosome, and centromere. Survivin is expressed in fetal kidney, liver, lung, and brain. The protein survivin is encoded for by the BIRC5 gene. The protein is expressed in many types of carcinomas. Anti-PRODH antibody binds against the target proline dehydrogenase (oxidase)1. PRODH is localized on the matrix of the mitochondria and expressed in lung, skeletal muscle, brain, heart, and kidney tissues. Defects in PRODH are the cause of hyperprolinemia type 1 and susceptibility to schizophrenia type 4. People with hyperprolinemia type 1 are often asymptomatic, and thus sometimes go undiagnosed. Affected individuals have increased levels of proline in their blood. When symptoms are seen, they include seizures, mental retardation, and neurological problems. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by difficulties perceiving reality including auditory hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized speech.
