Intermediate Filaments

Intermediate filaments are components of the cells cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton proteins form the scaffolding of a cell and effectively give it structure to hold the cell contents inside. Intermediate filaments are highly malleable and can be stretched and bent to fit any structural needs. They are called intermediate filaments because they are an intermediate in size between the other cytoskeleton filaments: larger than actin filaments but smaller than microtubules. Each IF consists of an alpha helical rod domain connecting to an amino end head and a carboxyl end tail. Intermediate filament units form dimers which attach to form tetramers. These tetramers can associate in sheets. The sheet rolls into a tube to form a ropelike filament bundle. It is this supercoiled sheet which provides for the structural and functional stability of the cytoskeleton. There are over 70 different genes encoding for different types of IFs. Despite their differing origins, they all have similar characteristics like size and structure. The type of intermediate filament present in the cell depends on the species. Types of Ifs include keratins, vimentin, desmin, and lamins.

White sponge nevus of cannon, also known as Cannon's disease, is an autosomal dominant skin condition most commonly appearing during childhood and adolescence. Affected individuals have thick white spongy plaques in their mouths.
