Glia Markers

Glial cells, often called neuroglia or glia, are non-neuronal cells that maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and provide structural support for neurons in the brain and other parts of the peripheral nervous system. They are crucial to the development of the nervous system including the formation of synapses. They are implicated in the suppression of neuronal repair when injury takes place (particularly in the central nervous system). Astrocytes are the largest of the glial cells. The astrocytes are able to enlarge and proliferate in order to form scar tissue and produce inhibitory molecules. These inhibitory molecules can inhibit the re-growth of damaged or severed axons. Some astrocytes are specialized macrophages that are able to protect neurons in the CNS and remove neurotransmitters from within the synapse once they are no longer necessary. Oligodendrocytes are glial cells that coat axons in the CNS with myelin. Schwann cells are similar to oligodendrocytes but myelinate nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Specific glia markers exist on differentiated neural cells. Glia marker antibodies can bind against these glia markers on the glial cells. This is useful in science and research to determine the action of glial cells or their ability to grow and proliferate.

Anti-survivin antibody binds against the target protein survivin. Survivin is localized in the cytoplasm, nucleus, chromosome, and centromere. Survivin is expressed in fetal kidney, liver, lung, and brain. The protein surviving is encoded for b the BIRC5 gene. The protein is expressed in many types of carcinomas. Anti-iba1 antibody binds against the target iba1. Iba1 is localized in the cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, and ruffle membrane. It is detected in T-lymphocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Iba1 is an actin-binding protein that enhances the membrane ruffling and RAC activation. Iba1 binds calcium and may play a role in macrophage activation and function.
