Cellular Differentiation

Differentiation of cells occurs when a less specialized cell becomes a cell of a more specialized type. Many processes are involved in cellular differentiation and differentiation occurs numerous times in the development of a complex, multicellular, organism like a human being. At conception, a single celled zygote develops into a multicellular embryo. This embryo will continue to differentiate to eventually become the entire complex organism. This development occurs in response to triggers from the cell itself or from the surrounding cells. Cells can either be totipotent or pluripotent. Totipotent cells have the capability to differentiate into any other type of cell while pluripotent cells can differentiate into man different cell types but not into any kind of cell. The differentiation process involves changing the cell’s size, shape, membrane potential, responsiveness to signals, and metabolic activity. The study of cell differentiation has become a very important area of research, especially with regard to adult and embryonic stem cells and their many uses.

Anti-SRD5A2 antibody binds against the target steroid 5 alpha reductase 2.
