Axon Guidance

Most neurons are developed during gestation and the earlier stages of embryogenesis. The nervous system is derived from the outer most tissue layer, the ectoderm. After the development of these undifferentiated nerve cells, or stem cell precursors, the differentiation can occur. This is when the migration of these immature nerve cells can move to their final destinations and continue to mature. This occurs when the neuronal axons sprout from the immature cells and elongate through the surrounding tissues to reach their closest neighbors. This happens then the tip of the neuron elongates into a structure called a neuron growth cone. The growth cone can advance and turn until it reaches its proper destination. Axon guidance, or axon pathfinding, is the process by which the neurons send out their axons to reach the targets. Although the mechanisms by which this occurs are not fully understood, it is estimated that the growth cone can sense a gradient of a guidance cue or cues that can either attract or repel the traveling neuronal growth cone.

Anti-slit2 antibody binds against the target protein slit 2. Slit2 is secreted by sales and expressed in fetal lung and kidney as well as adult spinal cord. Slit2 acts as a molecular cue to guide cellular migration during neural development. Anti-EPH receptor B2 antibody binds against the target ephrin type B receptor 2. EPH receptor B2 is localized on the cell membrane and expressed in the brain, heart, lung, kidney, placenta, pancreas, liver, skeletal muscle, and fetal brain. EPH receptor B2 is a receptor for members of the ephrin0B family and can act in aspects of retinal ganglion cell axon guidance to the optic disc. It is also a tumor suppressor. Defects in EPHB2 may cause susceptibility to prostate cancer. Prostate cancer starts in the prostate gland. The prostate is a small structure that exists in the male reproductive system. One's chances for prostate cancer increase drastically with age as prostate cancer is the most common death among men over age 75. Affected individuals experience symptoms like delayed start of urine stream, urine leaking, blood in urine, and lower back or pelvis pain. Treatment includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. For those with the prostate removed, their fertility is compromised and those individuals are typically sterile.
