Adaptive Immunity

Immunology is the study of the immune system and its functions. The immune system can function in either specific, adaptive ways or in innate or non-specific ways. The adaptive immune system involves complex antigen-specific immune responses which are specialized and exclusive to certain invaders like bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Adaptive immunity is remembered, meaning responses against a re-visiting antigen are increasingly speedy and effective with each future attack. This is due to the rearrangement of DNA in each cell that occurs after an adaptive immune response so that future generations may inherent the ability to combat the specific pathogen. During an initial acquired immunity response, antigens are presented to lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, bone marrow, thymus, etc. ) so that B-lymphocytes (B cells) and T-lymphocytes (T cells) can be differentiated into effector cells and reproduced. B cells are produced in the bone marrow as are the precursors to T cells. T cells mature in the thymus. Both mature B and T cells contain receptors that can bind against specific antigens.

Anti-CECR2 antibody binds against the target CECR2. CECR2 is a bromodomain found in chromatin associated proteins. Bromodomains interact with acetylated lysine and contain several mammalian T-cell surface antigen CD2 proteins as well as homologous African swine fever virus sequences. Defects in CECR2 are implicated in cat eye syndrome. Cat eye syndrome is a developmental disorder caused by a defect on chromosome 22. Affected individuals have impaired mental function, disorders of the heart and kidneys, and malformations of the eye (including iris and retina issues). Anti-BLNK antibody binds against the antigen target BLNK. BLNK functions as a linker protein that connects phosphate enzymes (kinases) with B-cell receptors. BLNK also plays an integral role in BCR (B-cell receptor) induced B-cell apoptosis. BLNK is located in the cytoplasm and cell membrane and expressed in the highest levels in the spleen with lower concentrations in the liver, pancreas, small intestines, and colon. Defects in BLNK cause agammaglobulinemia type 4. Agammaglobulinemia affects the body's ability to fight infections by blocking the body's ability to generate mature B cells. Affected individuals lack effective levels of antibodies in their bloodstream and often times develop serious and fatal infections.
